The Boston Bruins’ fans have been waiting eagerly for the announcement of a new contract for anticipated starting goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman. Informal skates with Bruins players have begun, but Swayman has yet to sign.

The Bruins and Swayman have been bargaining all offseason, with neither party wanting to compromise on what they believe is the best offer. According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Bruins had a long-term contract offer for Swayman, but he never signed it.

“I do believe at some point there was an eight-year deal on the table,” Friedman told reporters. “But it was in the sixes.” “I don’t think anyone has ever been close here.”

Eight years may be exactly what both parties are hoping for in terms of contract length, but that money sum falls far short of what Swayman has been seeking.

According to reports, Swayman has requested for up to $10 million per year, although Friedman has also been told that the contract inked by Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is more in line with Swatman’s expectations.

For reference, the Bruins inked McAvoy to an eight-year contract worth $9.5 million per year.

Swayman wants his money, and rightly so. The Bruins demonstrated their commitment to him as the full-time starting goalie by trading Linus Ullmark during the offseason. For the first time in his career, Swayman is asked to bear the weight for the Bruins.

Friedman also believes the Bruins are concerned about his lack of experience as a full-time starter. They have faith in Swayman, but they have never seen him take on such a position.

The Bruins have $8.6 million in cap space left and a ticking clock. Training camp is quickly coming, and Swayman will need a contract to play for the Bruins.
