“Hoping for better” – Matt Peet critical of Wigan Warriors win over Hull FC

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet

Despite his side winning, Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet was critical of his side’s performance against Hull FC as he claimed he had been “hoping for better”.

The Cherry and Whites won 22-4 at home against strugglers Hull FC who were well in the game approaching the hour mark but faded away in their attacking threat.

It ended up being a comfortable if not spectacular win for Wigan Warriors and Matt Peet was more than aware of that as he spoke on Sky Sports post-game.

When it was posed to him by Jon Wells that his side had ‘got their rhythm back’, Peet laughed off the suggestion, stating:  “I think you’re being kind saying that. We need to improve. We’ve faced a few challenges last few weeks and picked up a few wins, but we know we’re going to have to be better.”

He added: “I was hoping for a bit better today, I think the players are the same, but you’ve got to credit the Hull FC for some of the things that they did well.

“I hope we build more rhythm going forward, that’s for sure.”

Wigan Warriors veteran comes through landmark game with eight stitches

Super League’s leading try-scorer couldn’t add to his tally but put in a strong performance despite requiring eight stitches after opening up a nasty cut on his head.

Asked about his skipper for the day, Peet stated: “I’m very proud of him. It’s a privilege to work with him, he was captain fos us today which I think is the first time and I think he’s one that we’re really excited for and I think the lads want him to perform well because he’s such a popular member of the playing group.

“We think a lot of him and he delivers as a player as well which is probably the most important thing. We love him to bits, his family is ingrained in the club and like you said, every club needs people like Liam Marshall.”

Wigan Warriors will now head to Perpignan to face an out-of-sort Catalans Dragons next week and Peet is hoping for a significant improvement, as he’s sure Steve McNamara will also be wanting.

“It’s that time of the year, I think everyone’s playing for something important and there’s a lot banking on these games and I think both ourselves and Catalans are looking to improve next week.

“It will probably be the team that improves the best going into that game that comes out on top.”
