The Chicago White Sox are having a historically terrible season. The White Sox are only seven losses away from having consecutive 100-loss seasons, and they could finish with the poorest record in modern baseball history. Things are so bad in Chicago that the organisation stated it would decrease season ticket pricing in 2025.

Despite the complete lack of competence on the South Side, baseball continues to be played. And the White Sox need pitchers to devour innings until the season is mercifully over. With that in mind, Chicago claimed reliever Enyel De Los Santos off waivers after the New York Yankees designated him for assignment, according to the team’s official X account.

The Yankees improved before the trade deadline, getting third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins and relief pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs. In a more under-the-radar trade, New York acquired De Los Santos in a deadline deal with the Padres.

The Yankees signed De Los Santos in the hopes that he would add some depth to the bullpen. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old journeyman failed to impress in five games with New York. He had a 14.21 ERA, 2.526 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, and an ERA+ of 31 in 6.1 innings in the Bronx.

On August 7, 2024, in the Bronx, New York, USA, New York Yankees relief pitcher Enyel de los Santos (62) delivers a pitch to the Los Angeles Angels during the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees had had enough after the well-traveled righty allowed eight hits and seven earned runs in 1.2 innings against the lowly White Sox. Two days later, on August 14, New York designated De Los Santos for assignment after placing Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list.

The White Sox, desperate for pitchers to pitch the remaining innings of the 2024 season, pounced and claimed De Los Santos off waivers. Given that he helped Chicago win before joining the team, this may be an intriguing battle.

Unfortunately for De Los Santos, he will end up in baseball purgatory. It’s an especially difficult landing given that he had played for two clubs that were poised to make the playoffs before joining the White Sox. De los Santos began the season with the San Diego Padres. He pitched better in San Diego than in New York, with a 4.46 ERA, 1.289 WHIP, 10.7 K/9, and an ERA+ of 92 in 40.1 innings. Nonetheless, the Padres chose to release him at the deadline.
