Oxnard, California — Throughout the team’s training camp in Southern California, head coach Mike McCarthy and his staff have praised the new rookie class’s work ethic and potential, with second-round choice Marshawn Kneeland serving as a prime example of this language.

Initially labeled as a “freakishly athletic” hard-working individual during his time at Western Michigan, Kneeland has converted that mentality to the NFL, and it’s showing up in the early stages of his career to his coaches and peers.

“On our off day, we had an off day whenever it was,” said assistant defensive line coach Greg Ellis. “Marshawn contacted and wanted me to go over some footage. It’s like this is our day off, but I understand. I was talking to my wife when I told her I needed to leave since I had a meeting with one of the men to go over some film. I was pleased to see a kid as talented as he is who recognizes that it takes more than what he did in college.

Kneeland has even piqued the interest of standout defense Micah Parsons, who likened the second-round pick’s skillset and mentality to an eight-time Pro Bowler with a similar body and skill set.

“I believe he is going to be a great player,” Parsons added. “I’m giving him comparisons; I believe he’s a young Cam Jordan. I believe he has the talent and ability. He’s always hungry, eager to learn, and possesses that dog instinct. He possesses unteachable qualities.”

“Sometimes you have rookies come in here…”They are reluctant. Marshawn came in right away, asking questions.”

While Kneeland has had a quick start to his NFL career and is earning the respect of those around him, being a rookie still entails battles and hurdles in transferring into the pro game.

“Marshawn’s been great in camp,” defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. “He’s working really hard on some of the pass rush stuff, because I don’t think he was as efficient at it. He’s been excellent against the run. He’s a worker, and I believe he’ll continue to work.

Kneeland was expected to play a significant role in his first season with the free-agent losses of Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr. However, with Sam Williams’ injury, the need to come in and contribute has only increased.

“You take Sam away, and that’s a lot,” Ellis explained. “There’s a lot of opportunity for Marshawn.”
