Hollywood’s queen of tears… she has so many reasons to cry: Doris Day, who died at the age of 97, endured abuse, four unsuccessful marriages, and the loss of her millions.

Doris Day was famous for her ability to cry on cue, and for all of her reputation as Hollywood’s ultimate lovely and innocent ‘good girl’, she had plenty to cry over.

Many performers recall periods of unhappiness when they needed to open their tear ducts, and ‘Miss Lachrymose’, as she was called in the industry, had enough.

She was the victim of a wife-beating first husband, followed by a second who couldn’t handle her success, a third who bankrupted her, and a fourth with whom she was extremely unhappy.

It’s no surprise that she later turned her attention to animals.

The renowned actress and singer, known as ‘America’s Sweetheart’ during her prime in the 1950s and 1960s, died at the age of 97.

She was accompanied by close friends at her mansion in Carmel Valley, California, where she once maintained up to 50 stray pets.
