Ex-USC basketball star, Lakers rookie Bronny James stands in front of 2024 NBA Draft reporters

The Los Angeles Lakers made a bold move in the 2024 NBA Draft by selecting former USC basketball standout Bronny James in the late second round. James has shared his honest feelings about joining the Lakers on social media.

James was asked a slew of questions during an interview on the Lakers X (previously Twitter) account to let fans get to know him better. One of the most memorable responses James gave was about how he felt when the Lakers drafted him:

“[When I] heard my name called, it was a lot of emotions,” James remembered.

Furthermore, James explained why he chose the No. 9 jersey.

“Well, there weren’t many numbers available for me to select. Nine was one of the ones that resonated with me, especially since I have three of them tattooed on me. “Juice World is 999, which means it’s turning everything negative upside down,” James explained.

Many fans and commentators were divided when James announced his decision to enter the 2024 NBA Draft. During his first season with the USC basketball team, he averaged only 4.8 points. James’ rookie season began late due to his rehabilitation from a serious heart episode that occurred over the summer of 2023. Nonetheless, he dazzled evaluators with outstanding performances at the NBA Draft Combine.

James did not have the season he was supposed to have at USC, but he remains a highly regarded talent. He was a McDonald’s All-American and ranked No. 23 in ESPN’s Class of 2023 Top 100. James is aware that some people doubt his potential to be successful professionally. When asked what he would say to a younger version of himself, he delivered an encouraging response.

“There will be many people who do not want you to win. And you’re going to have a lot of ups and downs, but you’re a dedicated worker, so keep going,” James told the Lakers on X (previously Twitter).

James will most likely spend substantial time in the G League during the 2024-25 season. This allows him extra growth time, which he lacked during his abbreviated season at USC. It’ll be intriguing to see how his career develops as he joins a world-class franchise alongside his father, LeBron James.

The Lakers hope to improve on their 2024 playoff performance and make a deeper run in 2025.
