Bobby Witt Jr. came through for the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. His go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning against the Chicago White Sox on the road propelled the Royals to an 8-5 comeback victory.

Furthermore, it added to the difficulties of the White Sox, who recently hit a new low point—a historic one—with that setback at the hands of Witt and company, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.

“The Chicago White Sox blow their 27th save of the season on Bobby Witt Jr.’s grand slam, and just like that, the White Sox set a franchise record with their 15th consecutive loss.”

Witt only needed one pitch from White Sox reliever John Brebbia to turn the tide in Kansas City’s favor. His home run was the Royals’ third in the eighth inning, following Hunter Renfroe and MJ Melendez’s back-to-back home runs off Steven Wilson, who was later replaced by Brebbia. With a man on base from Wilson, Brebbia hit Adam Frazier with his tenth pitch before walking Michael Massey to load the bases for Kansas City.

Witt then completed the rest, hitting a grand slam to put the Royals ahead for good.

“I’m just trying to be ready for every pitch because you never know what you’re going to get in the big leagues,” Witt said after the game, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN). “These pitchers are good so you just want to be prepared.”

Witt has been on a tear. He went 2-for-5 in the White Sox game, bringing his 2024 MLB regular season batting line to.347/.391/.597 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs. In addition, he maintained his hitting streak, having recorded a hit in each of his last 11 games. Witt has a.545 batting average (24-for-44).

“There were so many things that went well tonight, but Bobby’s definitely the headline,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said after the win over the struggling White Sox. “Great, great poise to not try to do too much and he’s just got so much talent, so much bat speed and power.”

Witt will aim to keep it going on Tuesday night, when the Royals and White Sox play the second game of their three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox’s pursuit for their first win in the second half of the season continues. They last tasted success on July 10, when they defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-1 at home.
