Jodie Foster has been in the spotlight for almost 50 years, but she has also raised two kids, Charlie and Kit, while continuing her work.

The actress from True Detective: Night Country gave birth to her first child, Charles Bernard, in 1998. Three years later, she welcomed her son Christopher “Kit” Bernard. Foster has children with her former spouse, Cydney Bernard, with whom she separated in 2008. The actress married Alexandra Hedison in 2014.

Foster has remarked on the necessity of protecting her children’s privacy while they were small. “If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too would value privacy above all else,” she claimed at the Golden Globes in 2013.

Foster became a mother on July 20, 1998, with the birth of her son, Charles Bernard Foster. In 2016, Foster told PEOPLE that “he’s an amazing artist” who is “really into improv.” She continued: “he’s also a really good student, so he’ll go to college.” After high school, Charlie attended Yale, the same university as his mother.

Charlie participated as an actor and crew member in numerous school theater shows between 2017 and 2021, according to the Yale College Arts website.

In a 2018 interview with Net-a-Porter, Foster described her older son as “super-charming” and “super-spontaneous” before sharing a humorous story about Charlie as a toddler.

“I didn’t want them [my kids] to know about my celebrity at all,” she told me. “I remember when my son was about 4, he thought I was a construction worker.”

On September 29, 2001, Foster gave birth to her second son, Christopher Bernard Foster, whom she affectionately called Kit.

When Foster announced her second pregnancy, she told gossip journalist Liz Smith, “I adored being pregnant with Charlie and look forward to having this experience again. I am interested in all things health-related, including yoga.”

Kit was born in L.A. and grew up with his brother Charlie and two mothers.

“I have a psychological need to create a really safe, normal life for them [my kids], because if there was anything I missed out on in my childhood, that was it,” Foster told Psychology Magazine in 2007. “I really craved having a routine, stable life and that’s what I’ve given to my kids.”

She told PEOPLE about Kit in 2016, “My little one is just the nicest person I’ve ever met.” In another interview with Magic Radio the same year, she stated that “he’s a little sensitive,” and that she “waited many, many years” to let him watch her film The Silence of the Lambs.

Unlike his older brother, Foster has stated that Kit is not interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment world. “My younger son is really shy, and I can promise you he will never be an actor,” she told The Guardian in 2018.
