Team USA's LeBron James in front of American flags

LeBron James has been named the men’s flag bearer for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics. It’s a huge honor for the NBA star, who adds another uncommon achievement to his already illustrious career.

James is the first men’s basketball player and the third Team USA hooper to carry the flag at an Olympic Games, following Sue Bird (2020) and Dawn Staley (2004). Flag bearers are chosen through a vote of fellow Olympians.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said in a statement released by Team America. “As a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only me, but to my family, all the kids in my community, my teammates, other Olympians, and so many more people throughout the country with huge dreams. Sports have the capacity to unite us all, and I’m honored to be a part of this historic occasion.”

LeBron James has been a major contributor for Team USA men’s basketball throughout the showcase, and he will try to lead the team to gold in France, his third gold medal. James, who is representing the United States at the Olympics for the fourth time, will play an important role in kicking off the Games.

“We are thrilled to announce LeBron James as one of two flag bearers who will lead Team USA in the Opening Ceremony, officially opening the Paris 2024 Games,” said Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic Committee, in a statement. “Being chosen by your teammates to carry the flag is a fantastic honor, and it demonstrates LeBron’s passion for Team USA and dedication to his sport. We will watch with joy as the flag bearers guide our athletes on an incredible adventure together.”

As one of the NBA’s all-time greats, James leads a roster of league talents for both his team and others in the 2024 Games. Team USA is once again regarded as the favorite to win it all, as James joins forces with other All-Stars and league champions, including first-time Olympians Stephen Curry and Joel Embiid.

The 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. local time in Paris (1:30 p.m. EDT). NBC will broadcast the ceremony.
