Trey McNutt is not ready to make his college pick quite yet. The highly coveted Sharker Heights standout was due to declare where he would play college football on Friday evening, choosing between finalists Florida, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M and USC. However, that will no longer happen. A few hours before the planned announcement, McNutt stated that he would push back his decision to Wednesday, Aug. 3.

This will be a pleasant choice for Ohio State fans who are still hopeful the Buckeyes will get one of the top uncommitted prospects in the 2025 class. McNutt has long been considered a Buckeye lean, but the safety did not take an official visit to the Scarlet & Gray this summer, and indicators had been pointing toward McNutt committing elsewhere. That may still be the case, but there is now more time before McNutt reveals his choice.

The idea was that McNutt would still take a visit to Ohio State during the regular season. That may still happen regardless of where McNutt commits in August.

McNutt is a five-star prospect in the 2025 247Sports rankings from Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland, Ohio, according to the 247Sports rankings. He is the top-ranked safety in the class, as well as a top-25 overall athlete and the second-best player in his home state, trailing only Buckeye quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair. According to the 247Sports Composite, McNutt is the No. 19 player in the 2025 class.
