The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching, and with the Wild Card situation so tight in both leagues, many moves will undoubtedly take place. For the New York Yankees, the last month or two hasn’t gone as planned. They’ve lost possession of the AL East division lead following a disastrous stretch, making them a team that will be proactive in buying — with the Miami Marlins looming as a potential trade partner.
The Yankees have allegedly expressed interest in Marlins reliever Tanner Scott and center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. While both of those players will help the team’s chances of winning, one of them — Chisholm — has a lot of questions about his character and how he fits in with the team.
Chisholm has stirred some feathers in the Marlins’ dugout, and the team’s veterans do not agree with him. Nonetheless, an unknown player talked with Jon Heyman of the New York Post and praised Chisholm, which should further encourage the Yankees to pursue the versatile outfielder.
“Jazz is a good child; he just needs direction. He is an excellent worker—the first to arrive at the park. All of the shenanigans are for show. “He is humble at his core,” the player stated. “The New York fans would appreciate him since he enjoys interacting with the audience. Just your typical very talented kid who requires a little structure because he can wander off at times.”
Based on how some talk about Jazz Chisholm Jr., it appears that he is responsible for huge locker room schisms. He’s just a 26-year-old outfielder whose intensity doesn’t always match those around him, making him appear poor in comparison.
For the Yankees, banking on Chisholm to put all of his tools together could be profitable. They’ll have a little more than a week to decide whether rescuing him from a bad Marlins team is worth the money.
Can Jazz Chisholm Jr. make his imprint on the Yankees?
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is almost guaranteed to leave the Marlins organization after the trade deadline. Miami currently has a 33-63 record, therefore it makes little sense for them to keep Chisholm rather than trading him.
The Yankees appear to be the most interested in Chisholm, and he’ll undoubtedly aid a squad that is still missing a few important players due to injuries. New York has also had its fair share of offensive issues over the last month or so, and Chisholm has enough pop in his bat to be a significant upgrade over the slumping Alex Verdugo.
Gleyber Torres remains the Yankees’ daily second baseman, but 2024 hasn’t been his best year. His OPS is at a career low.654; Chisholm should once more provide excellent coverage for that position. He’s now cutting.249/.321/.407 isn’t a great upgrade, but he’s still been more productive at the plate than Torres.
It’s unknown how much it would cost the Yankees to acquire Chisholm. He is only 26 years old and is under team control until 2026, making him an extremely valuable asset. Players who can play center field and second base while still possessing a lot of pop in their bat are hard to come by, which makes Chisholm even more impressive.
Chisholm, on the other hand, has only appeared in more than 100 games once in his career, during his first full season in 2021. Since then, a slew of injuries have hampered his progress, but 2024 is looking up to be the healthiest of his career, with only three games missed for the Marlins this season.
Will the Yankees be willing to acquire a player with Chisholm’s injury history? He has had numerous leg injuries, most notably a fractured toe last season, as well as hamstring and knee troubles during his big-league career. The Yankees, who are in a tight race for the AL East division lead, don’t need to make a big trade for someone who can help them win right now and then not have them on the field.
