A new era began for the Alabama Crimson Tide when Nick Saban announced his retirement after the conclusion of the 2023–24 season. Many are uncertain about whether this program will continue to be at the top of the nation now that Kalen DeBoer is in control. However, according to college football expert Greg McElroy, the coaching staff at Alabama is now stronger without Saban.

First, McElroy hands Nick Saban his bouquet of flowers. As far as football coaches go, Saban ranks up there with the very best of them. Therefore, it is not an easy process to replace him. But according to McElroy, Kalen DeBoer may have hired a greater coaching staff than Nick Saban had before he retired.

Wow, Nick Saban was incredible. Amazing. I am certain of it. But I don’t think that many people are going to take look last year and say ‘Well Tommy Reese as the offensive coordinator, that guy’s terrific.’ You look at Kevin Steele, the defensive coordinator, I don’t think that people are necessarily looking at him and going ‘Oh yeah, that guy was terrific.’ Great coaches, no doubt about it. But collectively, the staff at Alabama across the board, you can make a case that in some respects it’s improved.”

It’s not a bad argument. Kalen DeBoer brought in several great instructors to create his group. Nick Sheridan comes in and takes over as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Meanwhile, DeBoer hired Kane Wommack as defensive coordinator and he’s instructing the linebackers. Freddie Roach was also chosen as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach.

Overall, the Crimson Tide boasts a stout coaching staff and it’s not like Kalen DeBoer is a bum either. He presently owns an incredible 104-12 record as a head coach. He recently guided the Washington Huskies to the National Championship last season. Additionally, between his time coaching Fresno State and Washington, DeBoer posted a 12-2 record versus teams rated in the top 25.

When it comes down to it, Alabama should continue as one of the greatest teams in the country this season. Perhaps there will be some snags throughout the year with the multitude of changes made this summer. But there really is no reason to suppose the Crimson Tide misses out on the College Football Playoffs.

Look for Alabama to get off to a hot start as they start the season against Western Kentucky, South Florida, and Wisconsin. All eyes will be on Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide in Week 4 though, as they face battle against Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.
