Laura Robson, a former WTA player, shrugged off allegations that Jannik Sinner isn’t terrific on grass because history shows differently.

The Italian is the top seed at Wimbledon this year, although some believe he is not particularly good on grass and does not prefer it. The grass may not be his preferred surface, but calling him ‘not good’ on it is a bit much.

He recently won his maiden title as a number one at the Halle Open, an ATP 500 event held on grass. He reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last year, as former player Robson pointed out when Sky Sports inquired about the charges.

“I always find it funny that people are like ‘Sinner’s not great on grass’ and he’s not having it as his favourite surface. He made the semis last year, but I think the confidence he has in his game, the mental belief is such a difference this year.”

Sinner is different this year, as evidenced by his early performance at the Australian Open. The way he walked out against Novak Djokovic and defeated him in four sets demonstrated that he has truly ‘arrived this year.’

That confidence maintains even six months into the season, which is a significant boost to his chances. Sinner’s grass-court abilities were further demonstrated with the recent report of him defeating Djokovic in a practice set.

“Every time, he appears to be the favourite, and the way he goes about his business shows that he is humble and at ease with it. He arrived relatively early last week to begin practicing, and he looks pretty good.”

“He definitely smashes the ball the cleanest of anyone on tour, and it’s a great strike. “He’s the top seed for a reason.”
