The Los Angeles Lakers have drafted Bronny James. Bronny and his father, LeBron James, made history by being selected No. 55 in the second round of the NBA draft. They are the first father-son tandem in NBA history. Of course, with this progress comes criticism and debate. Not to add, this development comes with high expectations. This is to be expected, and some of it, I believe, is justified. After all, this is the son of one of the game’s all-time greats.
Previously, no player began their career early enough or played long enough for this to be possible. Sure, there are many sons of former NBA players playing in the league now. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Tim Hardaway Jr. all made names for themselves in the NBA. However, their parents’ professions had already ended, making it impossible for them to collaborate. So, once again, LeBron is in a unique situation, but what else is new? The public appears to be increasingly critical of LeBron’s role in Bronny’s success. But I believe that sentiment is wrong.
Why Bronny James Belongs in the NBA.
Sure, Bronny is the recipient of what Katt Williams would refer to as a “hookup.” But we can’t pretend Bronny merely rolled out of bed and was drafted. He’s been preparing for this moment for years. He sincerely wanted it. Bronny was so dedicated that he continued his pursuit after having heart arrest last year. The idea that Bronny was merely given this opportunity? I just can’t get behind that.
Nepotism is evident in cases such as JJ Reddick’s appointment as the Lakers’ new head coach. Nepotism frequently carries a negative connotation. However, at some point, we have all benefited from it. JJ Reddick has developed a relationship with LeBron, and the two appear to get along well. I have no doubt that the rapport they’ve developed helped Reddick land his new post. To be honest, some were critical of that as well, but it did not garner the same kind of attention as Bronny’s case.
I believe Bronny has earned the right to play in the NBA if he is talented enough. It’s not like Bronny stole a top draft pick from a prospect. He was drafted in the second round, for goodness sake. If anything, Bronny has a much better opportunity to improve his game than he would have had at USC. Finally, as a Black culture, let us celebrate seeing more of these options made available to our children. These examples need to be more common and accepted. Finally, this should be celebrated as a blessing. Too many times, unpleasant news dominates our feeds. Salute to the James family for giving us something to strive towards.
