Toby Sowery will make his IndyCar debut next weekend at Mid-Ohio, driving Dale Coyne Racing’s #51 car.

The 28-year-old Englishman will be the sixth different driver to drive the car this season, following Indy Nxt graduate Nolan Siegel (who currently races for McLaren) and former Formula 2 driver Luca Ghiotto.

“Racing in IndyCar is an exciting challenge for anyone, and I’m extremely fortunate to be given this opportunity by Dale [Coyne],” Sowery told reporters.

“Dale has been critical to IndyCar by providing opportunities for drivers to show themselves, and I’m excited for this challenge. It’ll be a challenging step to take after only spending one day in the car over a year ago, as well as adjusting to the hybrid system, but I’m up for it.”

Sowery began his single-seater career a decade ago in MotorSport Vision’s Formula 3 Cup for old F3 cars, where he won the championship as a rookie. He then won the 2014-15 MRF Challenge title, finished 14th in a part-time British Formula 4 campaign in 2015, and third in BRDC British F3 the following year.

Sowery’s second season in that series was less productive, with him dropping to fourth in the standings and winning two races, compared to five the previous year, and in 2018, he combined a move to sportscars in the International GT Open campaign with single-seater appearances in Italian F4 and USF Pro 2000.

He eventually entered the second tier of single-seaters in 2019, finishing third in Indy Nxt with one win and six podiums. After a year away, he returned to the series in 2021 and won three more podiums in a part-time campaign before competing in two rounds last year and taking another podium.

So far, his primary focus in 2024 has focused on IMSA’s LMP2 class with Algarve Pro Racing. He is seventh in the standings with one podium finish so far. He also competes in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.
