Chicago Sky's Angel Reese looks to pass during the team's WNBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Chicago.

Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky set WNBA history by recording seven consecutive double-doubles, the league’s longest stretch for a rookie.

The former LSU standout set the record against the Dallas Wings at home on Thursday, winning 83-72. Reese scored 16 points and had a career-high 18 rebounds.

In basketball, a double-double occurs when a player scores in double digits in at least two of the five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

“I’m just happy we finally won, and at home,” Reese remarked on ESPN after the game. “It’s quite thrilling for me. I try to be kind to myself and convince myself that I’m doing well. But I still have a lot of room to grow, and I’m just eager to be in this league and win more.”

According to CBS Sports, Reese broke the previous record of six consecutive double-doubles set by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998. Charles still owns the rookie season record of 22 double-doubles.

Reese still has a chance to match that, with eight double-doubles this season and 26 games remaining. She now scores 12.4 points and grabs 10.8 rebounds each game.

When asked about her accomplishment at a post-game press conference, Reese praised previous strong rookies who came before her, notably fellow LSU alum Sylvia Fowles. Fowles, who has the most double-doubles (193) in WNBA history, called Reese “Miss Double-Double Queen” while she was still in college.

“I love Sylvia. “She was a wonderful person and mentor to me while I was at LSU,” Reese remarked. “I know she is going to be super proud of me.”

Her historic victory comes ahead of Chicago’s highly anticipated rematch with the Indiana Fever, led by another outstanding rookie, Caitlin Clark.
