Last summer, the Canadiens signed Lias Andersson. We’re talking about the New York Rangers’ former top draft pick (seventh overall in 2017).

Lias Andersson to play in Switzerland next year

You had to wonder if Jeff Gorton intended to give him over to his Habs development team in order to maximize his former protege’s potential in New York, or if the Habs simply wanted to add a talented player to their squad.

Whatever the reason, he was in the organization.

Nothing was promised, so he traveled to Laval after training camp. He was a good player for the Rockets when he was healthy and spent the entire season with them.

He received no call-ups. One wonders how close he was to getting one.

You’d think the experience wouldn’t be repeated, but it’s official: the player will leave the Habs for next season.

In fact, he’s leaving North America, where he never had much success while playing in the NHL.According to an announcement from HC Biel, Andersson will continue his career in Switzerland. He has agreed to a contract for next season on the other side of the Atlantic.

It’s the conclusion of a “bet” in Laval. He would have assisted downstairs (and his productivity would have to be replaced), but he had no position upstairs.

It’s important mentioning that the Swede has always represented his country while in Europe. For the first time, he will not be performing in Sweden or North America. And I don’t blame him: if I had to play in Europe, I’d probably choose Switzerland.

I doubt we’ll see him in the NHL again, but who knows what a successful season in Biel could do for him.
