What do NBA players do during the offseason? Different players approach the offseason in unique ways. Yes, there will be some training here and there. However, as they wait for the season to resume, players find ways to relieve stress. LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers’ star, has the same answer as many young players today: Madden.

The Lakers player is reportedly a big fan of the Madden series, which isn’t unexpected. LeBron is an NFL fan, and many of them grew up playing the original Madden game. What could surprise you, however, is Anthony Davis’ claim that LeBron James is a Madden pro (video via ClutchPoints).

“He (LeBron James) informed us he beat the 164th best player in the world.”

According to Anthony Davis, LeBron is a ranking professional at Madden.

That’s shocking, to say the least. Contrary to popular belief, playing Madden at a high level is more difficult than it appears. The finest video game players spend months sifting through the game, looking for anything that will give them an advantage. If LeBron did actually defeat a top-200 player in Madden, that is a remarkable accomplishment. It may seem unlikely, but the Lakers great has done more unlikely things in his career.

Has LeBron played football before? Prior to his basketball career, the Lakers star was a decent tight end in high school. Obviously, he never considered football as a career. He clearly remains a fan, as evidenced by his continued support for a select NFL teams.

Aside from the maddening hijinks, LeBron, AD, and the Lakers have some concerns to address. Following a dismal 2023-24 season, the front administration fired head coach Darvin Ham. As a result, the squad has worked hard to find a new coach for the upcoming season. They were close to signing famed UConn head coach Dan Hurley, but he elected to continue his college career instead.

Last season, the Lakers were a mess both on and off the court. They appeared to be world-beaters at times, the same contenders who had advanced all the way to the WCF the previous season. However, they often appeared fragmented. Ham obviously had flaws; he was outmatched as a head coach and didn’t provide much from the bench. However, the team was also not well-built. The Lakers have been dealing with this issue for a very long time.

The first step in rebuilding this Lakers team is to select a capable head coach to guide the process. Following Hurley’s decision, former NBA great JJ Redick is the next most likely contender to be hired. Redick has no prior experience as a head coach, which makes his involvement in the process intriguing.

After picking their next coach, the Lakers will focus on their roster. It’s painfully evident that this squad has fundamental faults, and their new head coach will influence the majority of their future decisions.
