Who might the White Sox call up next to the major leagues?

Gene Honda is the famous voice of the White Sox through wins and tragedies.

For a generation of Chicago baseball fans, one booming voice completes the ballpark experience, from difficult seasons to a magical world championship run. Tina Nguyen of FOX 32 has the story of Gene Honda, the White Sox’s public address announcer.

CHICAGO — Last Tuesday, Drew Thorpe took the mound against the Seattle Mariners, which was important.

The White Sox not only took the next step in their rebuilding process, but they also offered Sox supporters something to look forward to throughout a disappointing season.

Thorpe did not disappoint, surrendering two runs on three hits, four strikeouts, and two walks. He threw 98 pitches during the evening.

“I can’t really put it into words, honestly,” Thorpe remarked, per the White Sox’s X account. “It’s my dream come true, and it was good to get the first one out of the way.”

Thorpe was the centrepiece of the four-player trade that sent Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres. Thorpe’s second move of the summer came after he was the centrepiece of the Juan Soto trade to the Yankees.

Thorpe was expected to make his debut this season, but possibly not so early as June.

Other players, such as Bryan Ramos, Jonathan Cannon, and Zach DeLoach, have made their MLB debuts in 2024, but Thorpe’s high profile provides reason for optimism.

In any case, Thorpe’s impressive performance raises the issue of who the White Sox will bring up next from their minor system. Here is a peek at who could be on deck:

Colson Montgomery, shortstop.
The White Sox’s 2021 first-round pick, the No. 9-ranked minor league prospect in the MLB and the top-rated prospect in the Sox’s farm system, is typically the first to spring to mind when considering the next prospect to emerge.

MLB.com predicts he’ll make his debut in 2024. However, unless the Sox sustain an infield injury, this could happen later this season.

Montgomery batted.219 in 59 games for the Class AAA Charlotte Knights, although he did score eight home runs and 28 RBI. He got promoted to Class AAA for the first time this season, having worked his way up from Class A and Class AA in 2023.

Iriarte, who was part of the trade that sent Cease to San Diego, may play for the White Sox this season.

MLB.com ranks him as the Sox’s No. 9 overall prospect in their organisational system. He was able to see time due to his development in the Padres’ farm system.

According to MLB.com, Iriarte was “temporarily shifted him into a relief role to prepare for a potential big league callup that didn’t come” in San Diego.

The Sox bullpen, particularly after the series against the Cubs and Seattle, which featured repeated squandered leads and walk-off losses, requires some assistance. Like yesterday. It could be a place where Iriarte can gradually adjust to the majors.

Jake Eder, a left-handed pitcher.
Eder, like Iriarte, came to Chicago via trade. Eder was a part of the transaction that brought Jake Burger to Miami.

The Sox have a large number of pitchers in their farm system. According to MLB.com, nine of the organization’s top 15 prospects are pitchers. Jonathan Cannon is one of those pitchers, and the Sox have relied on him this season. If the Sox show enough growth or have a pitching need, Eder might be the next player.

The latter has been the case as injuries have plagued the Sox lineup. Eder is now in Class AA, but that hasn’t stopped the Sox from promoting pitchers like him to the major leagues.

According to MLB.com, if Eder can consistently maintain his three-quarters arm slot and regain his lost velocity, he may be a No. 2 starter. If not, he still has enough talent to earn a spot deeper in a rotation.”
