“I’ve seen his last several performances. “I always watch these guys on video here,” Pedro Grifol told reporters on Sunday. “He throws strikes, he competes…He knows how to pitch, is cool, and has a pleasant demeanour. “I’m looking forward to seeing him pitch at this level because he looks like a big leaguer.”

Thorpe was traded to the White Sox by the San Diego Padres in exchange for their ace, Dylan Cease, who went to the West Coast.

Thorpe, 23, is the No. 85 prospect on MLB.com’s top 100 list, having tossed 60 innings with a 1.35 ERA and 56 strikeouts for Double-A Birmingham this season.

In 2023, he made 18 High-A starts and five Double-A appearances. He pitched 139.1 innings across both levels, with a total 2.52 ERA. He has a perfect 4-0 record at Double-A, with a 1.48 ERA so far.
