Pinstriped Pulse

The 37-18 Yankees have the best record in the American League and lead second-place Baltimore by 1.5 games in the AL East, a division that appears to be a two-team contest as June approaches, with Boston, Toronto, and Tampa Bay all trailing by 9.5 games or more. Anthony Volpe is batting.333 on a 19-game hitting streak, the longest in the Majors this season and the longest by a Yankee since the beginning of the 2013 season. Aaron Judge leads the MLB with a 1.039 OPS, and he recently became the first big leaguer in history to hit 12 doubles and 11 home runs in 20 games. Juan Soto is batting.310 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs, ranking fifth in the Majors with a.979 OPS. Although it ended during his previous start, Clarke Schmidt recently tossed 24.1 consecutive shutout innings on the road, the longest streak by a Yankee since Hall of Famer Mike Mussina in 2003.

How about that?

The Yankees’ rotation has been on a unique run in baseball! Over the last 14 games, all of their starting pitchers have gone at least five innings while allowing two or fewer runs, tying them with three other teams for the longest stretch in MLB dating back to 1893, when the pitching mound was relocated 60 feet, six inches from home plate. The only other teams to put together such runs are the 1907 Phillies, the 1968 Pirates, and the 2022 Mets.

Know Your Foes

The Angels have the second-worst record in the American League (20-33), trailing only the White Sox (15-40). The Halos are last in their division, eight games behind the West-leading Mariners and nine games out of the Wild Card spot. With several key players out due to injury, including Mike Trout (left knee surgery) and Anthony Rendon (left hamstring strain), Taylor Ward leads the team with 11 home runs and 32 RBI while batting.274. Jo Adell, with ten home runs, is the only other active Angel in double figures. Kevin Pillar is batting.407 in 54 at-bats with the Angels since joining the organisation after being designated for assignment by the White Sox, clearing waivers, and opting to become a free agent rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A. Since April 18, Luis Rengifo has a batting average of.369. Logan O’Hoppe, a Long Island native who was limited to 49 games last year due to left shoulder surgery, has a.266 average and 12 extra-base hits this season. The Angels’ bullpen ERA is 4.81, the fourth-worst in the Majors, and they are one of five teams that have surrendered at least 26 home runs to relievers.

Probable Pitchers

Nestor Cortes, who has tossed 12.0 innings without allowing an earned run in his last two outings, will want to continue his hot streak today when he takes the mound against Gryphon Canning. Tomorrow’s starters will be Luis Gil and Tyler Anderson, both of whom have ERAs in the top eight in the American League. Gil is fifth with a mark of 2.11, while Anderson is eighth with 2.52, a percentage point ahead of Schmidt. Gil will look for his sixth consecutive win, and Carlos Rodón will strive for his fifth in a row when he faces Patrick Sandoval in the series finale.

Looking ahead to the Dodgers.

After their current California road trip concludes, the Yankees will welcome a team from Golden State on their next homestand, when Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and the Dodgers visit the Bronx for three big games! With so many major names on each side, including a handful of players who could one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame, you won’t want to miss any of the action. YES and the YES App will offer exclusive coverage of the series opener on Friday, June 7, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a one-hour pregame show from the stadium.
