Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers

The Nigerian striker feels there isn’t a significant divide between the two sides despite failing to beat the Hoops this season

Cyriel Dessers feels the difference between Celtic and Rangers isn’t that large – despite failing to win an Old Firm game this season.

Double-winning Celts went through the entire campaign unbeaten against their fierce rivals for the first time since 2017/18, winning four of their five matches. Philippe Clement has failed to get the better of Brendan Rodgers in his first Glasgow derbies in charge and it proved expensive as the Hoops grabbed their hands on the Premiership and Scottish Cup.

Ibrox coach Clement has already told fans there will be a huge renovation throughout the summer after yet another year in Celtic’s shadow. But Nigerian striker Dessers – who last month declared the Light Blues were the BEST team in Scotland – remains certain there isn’t a significant gulf in talent between the two sides.

Speaking after Saturday’s Hampden setback, Dessers said: “I think even if you look at the five games this season, the margin is not that significant. I think everybody sees that. But yeah, there is still something about these games. We didn’t win these games, this season.

“But on the other hand, I think the performance on the day and the game plan worked, it was good and it’s something to build on especially in these head to head games.”

He added: “To see them celebrate today and 10 days ago, that gives me a lot of energy to go again this summer. It seems funny to say, but I cannot wait for pre-season to start again and to do better this season. So yeah, I’m looking forward to that.”
