Why Lakers must trade for Nuggets rising star, per NBA GM

The Los Angeles Lakers failed to advance past the first round of the NBA Playoffs and are now facing a critical offseason. Many believe the franchise is still committed to retaining LeBron James. Assuming the organization brings James back, one NBA general manager feels a trade with the Denver Nuggets may propel Los Angeles to contender status.

Michael Porter Jr. is a name to watch for the Lakers this offseason, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy.com. Porter can be a fantastic shooter, which is something Los Angeles urgently needs. Michael Porter Jr., like LeBron James, can play both small and power forward.

An anonymous Eastern Conference general manager said of the potential deal, ‘If they want to go better, that is who they’d go after. They need a gunner who isn’t scared to shoot, and they’d be much better off if he can play 3-4 like LeBron, assuming he’s not a physical mismatch. A knockdown shooter who generates space is the first step toward regaining contender status.

It makes sense given the Lakers’ poor shooting performance this season. Having a true 3-point threat would go a long way toward getting LA back on track, especially given how good this team is at attacking the basket. Michael Porter Jr. would most certainly find himself available and might take the next step in his development.

However, this assumes the Nuggets desire to deal Porter to the rival Lakers. Denver may consider moving on from Porter in order to add consistent depth off the bench. Christian Braun might take over as starter and continue the shooting that Porter would leave behind. Heavy.com’s Deveney hinted that Los Angeles might trade Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves, and Jalen Hood-Schifino in exchange for Michael Porter Jr.

The Lakers are one of those sports clubs that build their rosters to compete every season. However, the front staff has struggled to build around Anthony Davis and LeBron James since winning the title in 2020. This is a critical offseason for the franchise, as it could make or destroy their future entirely.

First, LA needs to select a new head coach. JJ Redick is rumored to be the guy for the position, but that has yet to be determined as of this publication. Regarding the roster, it is likely that James would decline his player option and join free agency. If this is the case, the Lakers could lose one of their elite players.

Before the mid-season trade deadline, Los Angeles did nothing. However, the franchise must become more proactive this offseason. A trade including Michael Porter Jr. would be massive. That may convince LeBron James to return, giving the Lakers a huge three. Fill the rest of the squad with strong rotational players, and you’ll have a championship-caliber group.
