Manny Malhotra, a former Maple Leafs assistant coach, has been hired to coach AHL Abbotsford.

He previously worked for the Toronto Maple Leafs for four seasons.

Vancouver — Manny Malhotra, a former NHL player, has been hired as head coach of the Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League.

 

He succeeds Jeremy Colliton, who has held the role since July 2022.

He formerly served as a development coach with the Vancouver Canucks in 2016-17, before becoming an assistant coach from 2017 until 2020.

 

Ryan Johnson, general manager of Abbotsford, says he’s played NHL games against Malhotra and knows personally the tremendous characteristics he has “and the competitiveness in his DNA.”

 

“He is a teacher first and his skillset and mindset will fit in perfectly with our vision for the team in Abbotsford,” Johnson stated in the release.

 

Malhotra, a Mississauga native, was drafted seventh overall by the New York Rangers in 1998 and spent 16 seasons with seven NHL teams, including the Canucks. His wife, Joann, is from British Columbia. She is the sister of Steve Nash, a Canadian basketball legend.
