SunSport reports that Celtic is stepping up their efforts to sign Ghanaian international Daniel Amartey.

Brendan Rodgers is determined to get the versatile defender to Parkhead. Rodgers and Amartey previously played together at Leicester. After Leicester was relegated to the Championship last summer, Amartey was linked to Celtic, but he decided to sign a free transfer to Turkish powerhouse Besiktas.

The 29-year-old has made 27 appearances for Besiktas this season, but as the season has gone on, his early promise has faded. It has been reported that Rodgers is eager to arrange a reunion with the 53-cap international during the next transfer window.

Amartey has a long history in the Premier title, having played with Leicester for more than seven seasons, including their incredible 2016 title victory. January of that year saw him come from FC Copenhagen, and under Rodgers’ leadership, he played a crucial role in Leicester’s FA Cup victory in 2021. Amartey played in 145 senior games for Leicester, scoring three goals in those games.

Considering that Besiktas is fifth in the Super Lig and has had a lackluster campaign, their demands for Amartey should be reasonable. Next season, Rodgers wants to win his team’s 55th championship with Celtic, and he seems keen to add players to his roster after relying on individuals he wouldn’t have utilized this past season due to injury concerns and subpar hiring.
