Head coach of the Ohio State basketball team, Jake Diebler, has done a fantastic job so far filling out the roster for the 2024-25 season. So far, he’s brought in transfers Meechie Johnson from South Carolina, and Aaron Bradshaw from Kentucky. Now Diebler has his sights set on a high-level mid-major transfer from the gateway.

According to Joe Tipton of On3 Sports, Oakland transfer forward Trey Townsend booked official visits to Arizona, Louisville, and Ohio State throughout the month of April. His official visit to Columbus is slated for April 18th and 19th.

Townsend was selected the Horizon League Player of the Year this season with 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game for Oakland. He shot an efficient 45.5% from the field and 37.5% from three this past season as well. Townsend has also been chosen to the All-Horizon League thrice in his career.

Townsend helped lead Oakland to a first-place finish in the Horizon League, and he was a big component in the Golden Grizzlies’ upset over Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Oakland transfer is a high-level scorer that can score from anywhere on the court. Townsend scored at least 30 points in two of his last three games with the Golden Grizzlies. He produced a 38-point outburst against Milwaukee on way to capturing the Horizon League Tournament Championship and had another 30-point performance against NC State in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament.

Townsend has already been on an official visit to Michigan, and after entering the transfer portal, he has also gotten attention from Michigan State. He’s from Michigan, therefore it will be a challenge for Diebler to lure him away from his home state.

Diebler has been active in the transfer portal already and is building the roster for next season for how he wants it to be. The only area that needs to be filled is a scoring threat on the wing. If Diebler is able to land this transfer over the other programs interested, Townsend would fill those needs.
