Kevin Shattenkirk, a defenseman for the Boston Bruins, was fined $2,734.38 by the National Hockey League on Sunday. This amount represents the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement for unsportsmanlike conduct.

On Saturday night, the Bruins defeated the host Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4, and Shattenkirk was not called for a penalty despite his move with 19:37 remaining in the first period. The goaltender was knocked down after Michael Bunting of the Penguins collided with Linus Ullmark of the Bruins; Bunting’s stick caught Ullmark’s skates.

As Bunting skated by the Boston bench, Shattenkirk allegedly extended his stick and struck Bunting.

Money from the fine will go into the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund, as announced by the league’s Department of Player Safety.

Ullmark made 28 saves to clinch the victory for Shattenkirk, while Bunting contributed to the scoring with a goal and an assist.
