LATEST NEWS

April 13: INF Enmanuel Valdez leaves with a left thumb injury.

On a steal attempt in the sixth inning of Saturday’s game against the Angels, Valdez slipped on the basepaths, and Angels first baseman Miguel Sanó tagged him. Manager Alex Cora and a trainer rushed out to check on Valdez, who was clearly in discomfort. Pablo Reyes took up second base for the rest of the game.

Cora said Valdez was originally scheduled to have a day off on Sunday and would be reevaluated in the morning, but that he “should be OK.”

April 13: INF/OF. Romy Gonzalez is placed on the 10-day injured list; RHP Cooper Criswell is recalled from Triple-A. Gonzalez has had only one hit in four at-bats in two games since his call-up on April 9. His transfer to the injured list is retroactive to April 11.

Criswell was called up and started Saturday’s game against the Angels. Criswell made two starts for Worcester, posting a 0.87 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.

April 13: 3B. Rafael Devers (left shoulder) is sidelined until at least Sunday.

The star slugger has been suffering with a nagging left shoulder issue for a few weeks and was held out of the lineup for the third straight day on Saturday. Manager Alex Cora said Devers will most likely sit out Sunday’s game against the Angels, with a comeback planned for Monday in the Patriots’ Day game against Cleveland.

“I’ve been feeling it since spring training,” Devers said on Friday. “But as I swung, I felt it more and more. So, for me, I believe two or three days [off] is sufficient. I hope it doesn’t bother me beyond these two or three days, but that’s beyond my control. That’s why I’m simply trying to keep exercising to get stronger and get my shoulder back in excellent shape.”

April 12: SS Trevor Story underwent shoulder surgery.

While the Red Sox were playing on Friday, Story was in Los Angeles having significant surgery to fix the left shoulder injury he suffered on April 5. Story will not return until next season.

According to the Red Sox, Story “had a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim.” Dr. Neal ElAttrache conducted the operation.

April 12: 3B/1B. Bobby Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester, while RHP Isaiah Campbell was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder impingement.

Given Devers’ uncertain status for the next few days, the Red Sox chose to call up an infielder to replace the ill Campbell rather than a pitcher. Campbell was battered on consecutive nights on Wednesday and Thursday, allowing eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) in two innings.

April 12: 2B. Vaughn Grissom (left groin, left hamstring) starts his rehab assignment.

Grissom began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Friday night, going 0-for-3 as the DH in Syracuse, New York. Given Trevor Story’s season-ending injury, the Red Sox might make good use of Grissom’s right-handed bat. However, he did not play in Spring Training, so the club is unlikely to rush him through his rehab assignment, which can last up to 20 days.

Inf/OF Romy Gonzalez is on the 10-day/15-day injured list due to a sprained left wrist.
Gonzalez was placed on the injured list on April 13, retroactive to April 11, due to a damaged left wrist. His expected return date is TBD.

“Taking that step, and swing-wise it doesn’t feel right, so we decided to put him on the IL,” manager Alex Cora said on April 13. “So hopefully just keep him away from swinging, all that stuff, he’ll get better and we’ll go from there.” (Last updated on April 13).

RHP Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain).
Expected return: later this month

Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, and the Sox placed him on the injured list retroactive to April 6. In a positive trend, Pivetta resumed throwing on April 13. Pivetta was 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA in his first two outings this season before being shut down. (Last updated on April 13).

RHP Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement).
Expected return: TBD

On April 12, the reliever was placed on the disabled list for 15 days due to a right shoulder impingement. After doing admirably in his first five appearances with the Red Sox, the big righty got hammered on back-to-back nights on April 10 and 11, allowing eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) in just two innings. (Last updated on April 12).

2B: Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain)

Expected return date: late April/early May. Grissom began his rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on April 12 and went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter. Given that he did not participate in any Spring Training games, his rehabilitation may take longer. A position player’s Minor League rehab assignment can last up to 20 days. SS Trevor Story has dislocated his left shoulder.
Expected return: 2025
Story had surgery on April 12. According to the Red Sox, Story “had a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim.” Dr. Neal ElAttrache conducted the operation.
