Russell Wilson, the new quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is quickly settling in with his teammates.
Although the team’s offseason program has yet to begin, tight end Pat Freiermuth stated that Wilson has been working out and throwing routes with him and a couple of other Steelers players in California.
Freiermuth lauded Wilson’s communication skills and desire to win.
Following two dismal seasons, Wilson has every motive to start strong in Pittsburgh, and his offseason work with the receivers is part of that strategy.
Freiermuth did not say which players joined them in California, but Pittsburgh’s wide receiving group has changed.
In addition to the quarterback upheaval, two of the team’s top three receivers from last season have been traded or released.
Newcomers Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins are likely to play important roles in the offense.
Freiermuth, who has caught passes from several quarterbacks in his short career, will now add Wilson to the list.
He also had a brief history with backup quarterback Justin Fields, who had initially committed to Penn State before changing his mind.
Fields is anticipated to fight for the starting job, but regardless of who plays behind center, Freiermuth’s role as a consistent target across the middle and in the red zone remains critical.
This upcoming season is critical for Wilson, Fields, and Freiermuth as they all aim to rebound and make an impact.
Wilson’s early work with his new colleagues demonstrates his determination to succeed in Pittsburgh.
