Former Liverpool player Harry Wilson has spoken up about why he decided to quit the club and how he has “moved to the next level” since his departure.

Wilson worked his way up Liverpool’s academy, starting with the Under-9s squad. He subsequently became a significant role in the club’s youth levels, but was not given much of an opportunity in the senior squad.

The Wales international made just two first-team appearances for Liverpool before signing a £12 million deal with Fulham in 2021. He had loan spells at Derby County, Hull City, Cardiff City, and Bournemouth before settling down at Craven Cottage.

Wilson has made 111 appearances for Fulham since transferring to West London, scoring 18 goals and providing 34 assists. Now, the versatile forward has spoken up about how he believes his game has progressed since leaving Liverpool.

Wilson has admitted that the competition at Anfield hindered him from establishing himself as a regular starter. As a result, the 27-year-old has stated why he still believes he made the correct option by leaving Liverpool nearly three years ago.

“I feel I have moved to the next level,” Wilson told the BBC. “The move to Fulham two and a half years ago was a significant one for me. I’d been on several loans from Liverpool. Although my childhood dream was to make it into Liverpool’s first team and play on a regular basis, I realized that wasn’t going to happen.

“When I was 18, 19, and 20, I tried to join the club, but they had perhaps the world’s finest front three [Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino].

“So all of the loans I took on helped me develop as a player and study the game. It had come to the point in my life when I wanted to settle down on a personal level as well. So when the Fulham move came up, I spoke with [Fulham manager] Marco Silva on the phone, and I knew it was the right decision.

“I believe that was the best decision for me, and my game has improved significantly. The Premier League is the best league in the world, so playing regular games for a strong team in that league will only help me improve.”
