Ian Wright criticizes Liverpool star for involvement in Manchester United’s defeat: “You just don’t do that”
Liverpool suffered a painful defeat to Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday, but Ian Wright believes it was entirely their own fault.
After Scott McTominay started the scoring, Alexis MacAllister equalized, then Mohamed Salah put the Reds ahead moments later. But with only three minutes of normal time left, Antony executed a nice spin before blasting into the bottom corner.
In extra time, Harvey Elliott’s optimistic attempt was deflected beyond Andre Onana, giving the visitors the lead once again. However, United equalised eight minutes before the end of extra time.
Nunez made a big error by giving McTominay possession with a sloppy ball in midfield, which resulted in the goal. Nunez began the game up front, but found himself sliding deeper shortly before handing the ball away.
McTominay put Marcus Rashford in, and the England international scored the equalizer. And Nunez’s role in that goal enraged Wright, who blasted the attacker.
He told ITV, “You must look at Darwin Nunez there. What are you doing there? The point is, he has the capacity to pass it to the left back. You don’t put it back in that location. “You don’t do that.”
Though probably all of United’s goals might be attributed to errors, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was pleased with his team. He congratulated them for overcoming a rough start and cursed the wasted opportunities to win the game.
“Obviously today was on and above the limit; it was quite difficult for us with the 130 or whatever minutes. “United had the clear best start, and they scored the first goal,” he remarked.
“We needed to improve our organisation, we battled with man-marking, we didn’t play enough, and so on. When we discovered a way to play for the first time, we developed rhythm and it looked great.
“Then we deserved our 2-1 lead. And the second half was really fantastic, what we did here. But we didn’t finish the game, and leaving the door open away from home at Old Trafford ensures they will get chances.
“It got pretty hard for us, and it was incredibly hard for us. Then we go up 3-2, and everything is OK. Then they score: 3-3, 4-3. Come on, we can easily accept it; congrats to United, who fought really hard as well. That’s how it is; you want to get to the semi-finals.
