It’s possible that Liverpool fans will get a closer look at Xabi Alonso’s managerial credentials before the summer.

The Spanish head coach is widely expected to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season. Following a stunning 3-2 comeback victory over Qarabag in the Europa League, his Bayer Leverkusen side might potentially face the Reds in the quarter-finals.

In comments reported to X by Ben Jacobs, the former Real Madrid midfielder conceded that, while ‘only top teams’ remain in the competition, Liverpool should be regarded the ‘favourites’.

Xabi Alonso discusses maybe facing Liverpool in the #UEL. “Liverpool wouldn’t be the only intriguing opponent. The competition only includes top teams. However, I believe #LFC are the favourites to win this competition.”

‘disgruntled’ and may leave present club

Liverpool sent a huge statement.

While the quality of our previous opponents in Sparta Prague can be questioned, an 11-2 aggregate victory anywhere in Europe must be appreciated.

With all due respect to Brian Priske’s men – who dubbed Liverpool a Champions League class side – we’ll be of course expecting a greater challenge from Leverkusen, should we be drawn against the German outfit.

In the grand scheme of things, with Klopp’s final year at Anfield, youth playing at a very high level, and options filling in beautifully for starters, one issue remains.

Who can stop this seemingly unstoppable Liverpool side?
