Jurgen Klopp has announced that Ryan Gravenberch sustained ligament damage during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea.

Gravenberch was forced off in the first half, adding to Liverpool’s current injury woes. Moises Caicedo of Chelsea stood on him, and he had to be stretchered off.

Gravenberch was seen using crutches and wearing a protective boot during the full-time celebrations. The midfielder has escaped a break but appears to be headed for the sidelines, and Klopp was perplexed as to how Liverpool were not even awarded a foul, let alone Caicedo avoiding a caution.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “There were two sides fighting really hard, and the referee did not understand the quality of the game. That wasn’t even a foul?! Then the fourth official stating we cannot give a card… excellent idea. This circumstance was plain to me: everything you need for a card.

“They conducted an x-ray on Gravenberch; it is not broken, but the ligaments were damaged. I truly feel terrible, but everything else is great.”

The Reds were crowned champions at Wembley Stadium after Virgil van Dijk’s late extra-time header secured a 1-0 win. Liverpool’s victory was even more impressive given that they were missing 11 players, including regular starters Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, and Alisson Becker.
