Fulham captain Tom Cairney has commented on Everton’s recent points appeal. He believes that, while it may not affect Sean Dyche’s perspective, it might be ‘demoralising’ for the teams below them.

In November, the Goodison Park team was instantly fined 10 points for violating profit and sustainability guidelines (PSR) for the three-year period ending in 2021-22. The punishment, the harshest in Premier League history, plummeted Everton from 14th to 19th in the rankings.

The Toffees’ 10-point deduction for violating Premier League financial rules was lowered to six. This propelled them above Brentford and Nottingham Forest, giving them a five-point advantage over Luton Town in 18th position.

In response to the appeal verdict, Cairney told the Footballer’s Football Podcast: “I don’t think it’ll change Everton’s mindset as much.” I still believe Sean Dyche will maintain a siege mentality.

“It will be disheartening for the teams below Everton.” They went on such a good run that when the 10 points were deducted, the fans rallied behind them. It sums up Everton Football Club: they are completely united with their followers.

“Obviously, they haven’t been in great form lately, but this will provide a small boost. It will galvanize them. I still believe they had enough in the locker room to get by, but it’s a bit of a blow to the teams below them.

“It’s gonna be interesting to see how everyone reacts.”

The Goodison Park club is now facing an anxious wait after being accused in January alongside Forest for alleged account violations in 2022-23. That case must be heard by 8 April, but any appeal might push the process to 24 May, the week after the season ends.
