Jeremy Doku looked to make touch with the ball first, before placing his boot on the Liverpool midfielder’s chest.

And, despite reviewing the event, VAR determined that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the on-field ruling of no penalty.

Of course, this is certain to be a hot topic in the aftermath of the game, especially with such close scores.

And if Liverpool had been awarded a late penalty, they could have jumped ahead in the title battle.

However, while commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Peter Drury shared what the VAR officials said when Liverpool asked a penalty.

Peter Drury explains what VAR officials stated when Liverpool wanted a penalty late on.
Drury simply conveyed the VAR’s word, implying there was no need to overturn the close call.

He went on to say: “Word from the VAR, Doku played it in a reasonable position.”

It will be interesting to hear what Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola thought about the call.

It would be surprising if Pep believed a penalty should have been awarded, but Klopp may have a different opinion.

Although the Liverpool boss would have loved Luis Diaz to settle the game, he may feel his squad was shortchanged late on.

It’s a contentious issue, and the argument will most likely continue in the following days.

While seeing the events unfold live, Peter Drury and Gary Neville appeared to believe City was in danger, but VAR ultimately determined there was no foul play against the Liverpool midfielder.

Definitely one that will divide opinion, and it will most likely be a fairly even split depending on which side of the title race fans support.

That being said, Mike Dean saw something unusual in Darwin Nunez’s performance throughout today’s game.
