Liverpool’s strategy for the forthcoming transfer window is increasingly being debated, with their midfield receiving special attention.

Despite making high-quality acquisitions in 2023, there is an agreement that the team may benefit from additional reinforcements, particularly with Thiago Alcantara about to depart.

The squad’s fragility to injuries this season highlights the need for depth, with Porto midfielder Alan Varela linked with a move to Anfield.

Alan Varela has emerged as a transfer target for the 2024 summer transfer window.

In view of Liverpool’s plans to invest more in the midfield, Foot Mercato says that Varela is a target for the club.

According to a report published this week by Portuguese source O Jogo, Liverpool and Manchester City have been tracking the 22-year-old all season.

Since joining Porto in the summer, the 22-year-old has swiftly won over Porto fans, particularly in a Champions League encounter against Arsenal.

His performances have piqued the interest of PSG and Borussia Dortmund, in addition to Liverpool’s. Porto, which spent only £9 million on him, now values him at his £60 million (€70 million) release clause, expecting to profit from his rising stock.

Varela, who is often compared to Javier Mascherano, was on Liverpool’s radar before moving from Boca Juniors to Porto.

Despite initial reservations, potentially due to a preference for a more experienced defensive midfielder, Liverpool’s interest continues, particularly with Jurgen Klopp’s upcoming exit.

Varela’s ability and potential to excel in the Portuguese league may make him a significant component in the team’s future, according to the new manager.

While the cost may be a deterrent, Varela’s talent and potential make him a player Liverpool should keep an eye on, especially given that Wataru Endo is 31 and not a long-term defensive midfield solution.

The team’s midfield philosophy appears to be a work in progress, and Varela may be a valuable addition.
