Leon Bailey believes Aston Villa should be looking up the Premier League table rather than over their shoulder. He also claims he had no idea Manchester United had lost to Fulham until an hour after the game at Villa Park, when reporters informed him of the result.

Bailey was involved in two of Villa’s four goals against Nottingham Forest, giving them an eight-point advantage in the top five. Meanwhile, United suffered a late loss at Old Trafford. Bailey scored his eighth league goal of the season at the conclusion of the encounter, after assisting Ollie Watkins in scoring the game’s first. Forest had reduced Villa’s lead either side of halftime.

Following Villa’s first home league victory in 2024, Bailey stated, “I am trying to make this one of the best seasons of my career.” “At this point, the emphasis is on improving oneself and contributing to the team by scoring goals and providing assists, as well as always wanting to be there for them. Above all, we aim to reach our goal before the end of the season. My ambition is to be in the Champions League, as is ours.

“Our goal is to finish in the top four. That is also my goal. We will succeed if we remain constant and take things one step at a time. I have a lot of faith in this organization. All we have to do is keep going, be true to ourselves, preserve our modesty, and keep doing the good work. That is the most important element.

We went through a brief period, but the Premier League is a difficult competition. These challenges can arise from time to time; the key is to understand how and when to overcome them. We’ve lately played two terrific games, which should give us confidence for the remaining games. I’d rather not worry about it now that we’ve moved on. Hopefully, we can avoid reverting to that situation while maintaining our performance and consistency.

“This is a key moment in which you must perform at your best. You must make an effort to cling onto any easy points. We keep it in the back of our minds because the teams are close behind us and there are some that we can catch. We must proceed with caution and never lose sight of the fact that this is a critical moment.

“It serves no purpose to constantly look back [at the table].” We’re focusing on ourselves to see where we can actually go in the next three or four games, but it’s necessary at times. That is the key goal.

Bailey signed a new contract earlier this month, following an impressive start to the season. The winger explained his decision, stating that he dedicated his future to the club because of the opportunity to compete at the highest level of European football again.

“This club is amazing. Our team has been playing well, and our coach is doing an excellent job. I signed a long-term contract because I believe in this club and its future aspirations, and I feel good about myself.

“I just want to be here to support it and hopefully help Aston Villa get back to its potential.”
