Tony Mowbray believes Jay Stansfield’s absence from Birmingham City’s starting lineup against Hillsborough was due to weariness.

Stansfield was a surprise absence from the starting lineup against Sheffield Wednesday as the Blues suffered another defeat on the road. Mowbray introduced his nine-goal top scorer immediately after the Blues fell behind 2-0, but Stansfield was unable to ignite a recovery.

The 21-year-old ended up playing more than 40 minutes of the game, but his colleagues were unable to produce a clear-cut opportunity for him. Stansfield is likely to return to the starting lineup for the upcoming double header against Blackburn and Sunderland next week.

Tuesday’s game against Blackburn has been spiced up by the appointment of former Blues manager John Eustace as head coach on Friday. Mowbray will need no more motivation when his former club Sunderland visits St Andrew’s next Saturday.
