Maple Leafs Big Question: What to Do With Ilya Samsonov?Goalie Ilya Samsonov was experiencing a big slump in mid-December 2023. The downward spiral was so severe that it raised questions about his future as a quality goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following a dismal 6-5 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 29, Samsonov’s performance was heavily scrutinized. He had surrendered a total of 21 goals in his previous four outings. Fans and hockey analysts began to question his ability to compete at the NHL level – ever.

Samsonov was battling both physically and mentally. Technical challenges had an impact on his calmness and performance on the internet. As the Maple Leafs considered alternative remedies, including sending Samsonov on waivers, the urgency of the goalie situation became clear.

Samsonov was ultimately placed on waivers and passed over. He never reported to the AHL and instead took time off to recharge.

Samsonov’s Healthy Response for the Maple Leafs Nets in 2024
Despite the hurdles he experienced in December, Samsonov’s re-set was successful. He replied with great fortitude in the first two months of 2024. He’s seen a resurgence in form and has played an important role in his team’s recent triumphs. At first, it appeared like a nice surprise. However, he continued to perform well. He demonstrated great form between the pipes with a series of strong outings.

He enters tonight’s game against the Arizona Coyotes on a four-game winning streak and seven victory in his last eight outings. He has re-established himself as a reliable goalkeeper. While his overall statistics still need to be improved (his play was so poor that his statistics suffered greatly), Samsonov appears to be demonstrating that he can elevate his performance and contribute to the success of his Maple Leafs team.

The Maple Leafs’ Dilemma After the Season
Although it’s a long way off, and a lot can happen between now and the summer, the Maple Leafs’ season will eventually come to an end, for better or worse. If the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup, and Samsonov is a key reason, life becomes easier. The team will give him a raise and re-sign him (if possible).

However, if that is not the case, the Maple Leafs may have to make a major choice about their goaltender situation. With Samsonov’s play this season demonstrating inconsistency and uncertainty, the squad must consider their options going forward. Given Samsonov’s one-year deal and the likelihood of him leaving for another team, the Maple Leafs must find a goaltender they can rely on consistently. Is it Samsonov, or has he created a situation in which he cannot be totally trusted to lead this team?

Joseph Woll is emerging as a good option to fill the team’s needs, and the rest of the regular season and postseason will reveal more about his situation with the organization. The company will strive to figure everything out soon. That could entail a difficult decision-making procedure.

Is Samsonov part of the Maple Leafs’ future?
The Maple Leafs’ question is this: How can the organization position itself for success in future seasons? Ultimately, the Maple Leafs’ goaltender position remains unknown. However, the question of whether Samsonov should be considered for the team’s future will almost certainly arise.

Will his December swoon turn into a problem he can’t overcome? Furthermore, where will the team’s leadership fit into the strategic planning that includes him? How will they deal with the challenge that Samsonov has posed with his up-down-and-up play this season?

Will the Maple Leafs simply let him walk away and join another team?
