There is a clause in a new deal that Kirk Cousins must sign if he wishes to rejoin the Vikings in 2024.

Albert Breer of SI reports that Minnesota has spoken with Cousins, the quarterback, but is unwilling to offer him another fully guaranteed contract. The Vikings are unable to franchise tag Cousins because of void years in his deal. Regardless of whether the organization rosters him or not, he will be subject to a $28.5 million cap penalty.

The inability of the Vikings to tag Cousins gives the club a slight edge. Cousins can find a new home and sign with any team that comes knocking if they wait too long to re-sign him. There are numerous teams who might gain from this from a new quarterback, including the Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots, and the Las Vegas Raiders, who are anticipated to cut Jimmy Garoppolo.

However, Cousins is recovering from an Achilles tear he sustained in October when playing the Green Bay Packers. A team may be reluctant to sign a player who is 35 years old and recuperating from such a catastrophic injury.

It’s probable that Minnesota is trying to select a quarterback to replace Cousins because the Vikings hold the 11th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They still have the option to sign Cousins, of course, but it seems like nothing is moving forward.
