During Monday’s 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that many teams are interested in defenseman Chris Tanev. One of the more popular names available at this season’s trade deadline, there is only one catch. The Calgary Flames want teams to pay a specific amount, but clubs aren’t there yet.

Friedman names the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers as teams interested in Tanev. He adds that Calgary is searching for a first-round pick, but no one has offered one yet.

Friedman explains.

“I believe the Flames are waiting until the first-round pick is provided. I believe that’s what they’re looking for, and if a club steps up for the first round, I could see that occurring. And I believe there is a large bunch there. It’s Toronto, and I believe they’re offering numerous picks, but none are first. Their first or second choice isn’t available for another four years, which is a challenge. It’s Toronto, Dallas, I believe Colorado is there, Edmonton, and Vancouver.”

How serious are the Oilers about Tanev?
Friedman emphasized that it is extremely difficult for the Canucks to complete this transaction. However, while they appreciate the notion, they would prefer that Edmonton not acquire him. That must imply that the Oilers are making a strong push on this. Friedman says, “I think with Edmonton it’s all coming down to what they think they want to do, like what is their number one thing that they decide to go out, and they still have a little bit of time to figure it out here, but that’s like they’re they’re going to take a swing.”

Friedman cited reports that the league feels Holland isn’t afraid to make a bold move. “…nobody’s traded more first-round picks than you have and this is a goal for a team and a go for it here, so they’re going to do it again probably.”

What is the real issue for Oilers and others with Tanev?
Teams may believe Tanev will not sign, which could be contributing to the hold-up. Tanev is aware that the Ottawa Senators will make a significant offer for the blueliner this offseason. As such, it’s understandable that he’ll want to wait to see what the offer is. In other words, why sign with a team for a fraction of the Senators’ budget?

If the Senators intend to splurge, why give up a first-round pick for a player who is certain to leave? It would be different if Tanev agreed to an extension. If he isn’t, or there isn’t a commitment, handing away the first prize could be a mistake.
