Lance Newmark, senior director of player personnel for the Detroit Lions, has been appointed assistant general manager of the Washington Commanders.

Given that Newmark has worked with the Lions since 1998, this is a major blow to the team. After beginning as an assistant and working his way up through the scouting program, he was appointed to his final role with the Lions. He officially held the titles of area scout (1994-2004), national scout (05-07), assistant director of college scouting (08-14), director of college scouting (15-16), and director of player personnel (16-21).

Because of his crucial role in the Lions’ operations, Newmark was given the opportunity to interview in 2021 for the general manager position.

“With all of his experience, Lance Newmark has been outstanding,” Lions general manager Brad Holmes remarked in 2021.

Newmark will now work with Martin Mayhew, the former general manager of the Lions, again, since he now serves as the senior personnel executive/advisor, as the Commanders have previously officially acknowledged.

Regarding the change, Newmark has already provided an official statement.

In a prepared statement, Newmark stated, “I could not be more excited about joining the Washington Commanders organization.” “I firmly believe in Commanders General Manager Adam Peters and have the utmost respect for him and his vision for this business. I’m excited to spend this week in the DMV with Adam, Coach (Dan) Quinn, and the entire team.

This is already the second time a team has looked into the Lions’ front office this offseason. Prior to withdrawing himself from consideration, Lions COO Mike Disner was a candidate for the Carolina Panthers general manager position.
