The former playmaker for Arsenal won his first-ever AFCON silver medal.

Only hours after Nigeria failed to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Super Eagles player Alex Iwobi erased all of his postings on Instagram, according to Soccernet.ng.

Iwobi was on the field from the beginning as Nigeria lost the competition final 2-1 to Cameroon at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday.

Nigeria had performed admirably in the tournament leading up to the final, going undefeated in six games, winning five and drawing the other, and recording four clean sheets.

Iwobi played with more composure than the Super Eagles’ Frank Onyeka, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, William Troost-Ekong, and Frank Onyeka.

Iwobi, who is typically a dynamic attacking midfielder who tries to influence the game in and around the penalty box, was used in the AFCON as a deep-lying playmaker in Jose Peseiro’s preferred 3-4-3 configuration.

Iwobi had minimal opportunities to leave his mark in any of Nigeria’s games due to his shift in role and tactical responsibilities; he did not register a goal or an assist.

Following Nigeria’s lackluster performance against Cote d’Ivoire in the championship match, a number of supporters resorted to social media to criticize Iwobi for what they saw as his poor play. Some said he was to blame for Nigeria’s defeat.

The Fulham defender may have deleted his article in response to the harsh criticism, making it impossible for anyone to leave a remark on any of his previous posts.

Iwobi was a part of the Nigerian team that participated in the 2019 AFCON and took home a bronze medal.
