Ranking the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Deadline Requirements

Brad Treliving, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has four weeks until the NHL Trade Deadline to decide what the team should prioritize.

Given his failure as the driving force behind the Toronto Maple Leafs, I think it’s critical that we prioritize the team’s needs as we get closer to the postseason.

Replacing Treliving, President Brendan Shanahan, and coach Sheldon Keefe is one of the most crucial and evident actions that will not take place.

That can only occur if the Leafs are unsuccessful this season and Shanahan is fired by the MLSE President, who will then start again.

What then matters most to the club? Is it going to be a defenseman? A goalie, perhaps? Or how about some kind of forward? The items that require the most improvement are ranked here.

5. Left Winger in the Top Six

The largest free agency acquisition of the previous summer was left winger Tyler Bertuzzi, who signed a $5.5 million, one-year contract.

Bertuzzi has played just under 16 minutes per night on average while being paired with either Auston Matthews or John Tavares for almost the whole season. Though Bertuzzi has had more than enough chances to make Chris Kunitz envious, he has not succeeded thus far.

The club needs to address more pressing issues first, therefore investing resources to strengthen this position now could be a waste if those resources can’t be used to address another issue first.
