With the NHL trade deadline coming, the Toronto Maple Leafs have one of the league’s weakest defensive cores.

Yes, you read it right. To be honest, I believe that this is an area that fans of the team have identified as requiring significant improvement in comparison to the other features of this Frankenstein-esque lineup. Throughout this post, I’ll highlight five significant defensive acquisitions the Toronto Maple Leafs might (and should) make to enhance their back end for the playoffs.

Calgary Flames v Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs’ defensive unit has been uneven since the start of the season (some may argue much earlier). With injuries throughout the lineup, defensive combinations that make you wonder Sheldon Keefe’s sanity, and a notable lack of defensive skill. Toronto desperately needs a defensive makeover.

Here are some options the Maple Leafs could consider to either complement their current top pairing or provide depth to their roster.

How Toronto Maple Leafs Can Improve Their Blue-Line: Noah Hanifin. Hanifin, who has been a cornerstone of the Calgary Flames’ defensive core in recent seasons, is now paid $4.95 million.

Furthermore, Hanifin’s contract has a modified no-trade clause, which means he must waive it before any transfer can take place. Despite the Flames’ below-average season, Hanifin has shown glimpses of great defensive abilities. The 6’3″ defenceman’s superb skating ability, hockey IQ, and accurate stickwork make him a viable addition to the Toronto blue line, providing more NHL experience.

Chris Tanev. Another flare that makes slightly less than $5 million ($4.5 million with a modified no-trade clause) Tanev is a seasoned Flames defenseman with impressive defensive numbers. Tanev’s defensive skills are highlighted by his shot-blocking ability, physicality, and precise stance. The veteran’s leadership and calm temperament under pressure might strengthen Toronto’s defensive core.

Tanev (in my opinion) would be an excellent match for the Maple Leafs.

Sean Walker. Signed for $2.65 million, is a Philadelphia Flyers defenseman known for his gritty defensive abilities. Walker’s quick skating, shot-blocking ability, and solid positional play make him a consistent force on the blue line. His defensive abilities, along with a developing offensive game, position him as an important contributor to the Flyers’ defensive solidity.

With Philadelphia so close to making the playoffs, I doubt they will contemplate dealing Walker; but, everyone has a price.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Should Unleash The Beast
Overall, these defensive choices (whether totally practical or not) might help the Leafs make their final playoff push while also allowing them to make other changes within their budget.
