The Detroit Lions are now focused on the offseason following an extraordinarily successful 2023 season. What is Brad Holmes, general manager of the Lions, first on his to-do list? Find a way to extend Jared Goff’s contract, the starting quarterback. Joel Corry, a former NFL agent, speculates about what Goff would get in a new contract considering the state of the quarterback market right now.

Goff has changed his narrative in Detroit after it was first believed that the blockbuster transaction involving the Lions and the Los Angeles Rams was a salary cap buyout. It makes sense that the 2021 season was difficult. Goff had moved to a new city, and during the first year of the rebuild, Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell basically tore the team apart.

Before things truly took off in 2023, things greatly improved in 2022, with the Lions ending the season with a 9-8 record.

Regarding Goff’s impressive 2023 season, Corry observed, “Goff is getting the last laugh.” In addition to throwing for 4,575 yards on 67.3% of his throws with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and posting a 97.9 passer rating, he also guided the Lions to their first division title in thirty years, a 12-5 record. Goff’s completion % was a career high and was ninth in the NFL. In the league, he was ranked fourth in touchdown passes and second in passing yards.

What will Goff receive, then? Corry provides some guidelines.

It’s unclear, according to Corry, whether Goff will join Burrow, Herbert, Hurts, and Jackson in the $50 million annual club as a result of Detroit’s desire to name one of the NFL’s highest-paid players. “The ten highest-paid players in the league have average annual salaries that aren’t too far behind. The average contract length is 5.4 new years, and the annual amount is somewhat over $48 million.

You can read Corry’s complete post, in which he analyzes the other salaries of the best quarterbacks in the league and speculates on how that may impact Goff’s extension, here. He also brings up the possibility of a loose timeline for finishing the acquisition.

The remaining notes for today are as follows:

  • Linebacker Alex Anzalone of the Lions is another player who appears to be genuinely grateful for the 2023 campaign, but he’s also eager for more in 2024.

  • How fervent are Lions supporters? To watch a game that was being played more than 2,400 miles away, 37,000 people flocked to Ford Field, making it the largest NFL watch party ever.

  • Graham Glasgow, like a lot of us, might be watching the Super Bowl this year with a bad taste in his mouth. Further information about Glasgow’s thoughts on the big game and his chances of playing in Detroit again in 2024 can be found by visiting Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

In this case, I have to concur with Mike Golic Jr. You get him the ball if your All-Pro tackle is open. The law is as follows.

  • It is plausible that Lions general manager Brad Holmes is daydreaming about the things he can achieve during the winter while seated in his Allen Park office.

  • There are some members of the national media that I truly respect, but overall, I don’t like for most of them. Domonique Foxworth and Mina Kimes rank highly on the ranking. Listen to the most recent episode of “The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny,” Mina’s podcast.

  • Frank Ragnow, an All-Pro center for the Lions, deserves our best wishes despite a season marred by numerous ailments.

  • With his trademark intensity, Brian Baldinger dissects a movie, this time focusing on Alex Anzalone, a linebacker for the Lions.
