On Thursday night, the Boston Bruins defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in overtime at Canadian Tire Centre after a brief journey across the border.

With a record of 18-24-2, the Senators are still in last place in the Atlantic Division, while the Bruins improved to 30-9-9.

ONE IMPORTANT LESSON
After falling short in a close game against the Carolina Hurricanes the day before, the Bruins needed a victory to pick themselves up.

However, Boston was on the verge of winning again against the Senators due to penalties.

The Bruins gave the Senators six power plays by committing nine penalties, some of which were undoubtedly dubious calls that infuriated Jim Montgomery. Two of those were converted by Ottawa, but they did so at the right moments, tying the score late in the third frame.

However, Brad Marchand saved the day for the Bruins, who didn’t perform well and were outshot 37–23, just when they needed him.

STARS OF THE GAME: Marchand scored a goal 1:48 into the extra session to give the Bruins the lead and beat Senators goalkeeper Joonas Korpisalo. Charlie Coyle contributed to the decisive score.

Jeremy Swayman is proving why he belongs in the All-Star team. The 25-year-old improved to 16-3-7 on the season by blocking 35 shots from Ottawa.

With 3:18 remaining in regulation, Vladimir Tarasenko tied things up for the Senators with a power play. He had scored 13 goals so far this season.

RISKY WATCH
FanDuel Sportsbook has put a +132 odds on Coyle to record an assist. David Pastrnak’s goal in the first period was assisted by Coyle, who won the faceoff, giving him his 23rd assist of the year. On this prop bet, a $100 stake would have returned $232 in total.

Next up
The Bruins will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday to play the Flyers, continuing their road trip. The Wells Fargo Center puck drop is set for 12:30 p.m. ET, and NESN will broadcast both the game and an hour of pregame programming.
