A transfer gateway was not necessary for the coaching dream squad of Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, and Lane Kiffin to win a national championship. However, what about $100 handshakes and Dodge Chargers? (AL.com/Vasha Hunt)Media Group of Alabama

In addition to a fresh poetry from a reader, there are several responses to Alabama’s football team’s roster turnover in this Friday’s mailbag.

Nothing gets in the way of gorgeous, incisive, timely college football poetry, which is why the poem comes first.

The newsletter from last week requested four-line poems about college football from its readers. In the words of renowned sportswriter Grantland Rice, writing isn’t always enough to capture the sadness of the human condition. We then turn to verse at that point. The fallout from Alabama coach Nick Saban’s retirement sparked a three-verse poem about athletes quitting the Crimson Tide for Mississippi reader Jeffrey A. Waite.

Jeffrey A. Waite of Mississippi’s The Transfer

Although you consider yourself to be extraordinary, you are merely a mortal.

Now, young man, go ahead and enter the gateway.

Don’t call it NIL; everyone understands that it’s merely pay to play.

Not at all like the hundred-dollar handshakes of yesteryear.

Your favorite player departs, which hurts you so much.

However, his new school’s collective is causing it to pour.

The message was LANK, but the season was unique.

But ultimately, everything revolves around the Bank.

You exchanged the Crimson for the Gold and Garnet.

It will be disappointing not to make the playoffs.

You could have been first string if you had stayed.

It will hurt to watch from the bench.

Poetry submissions can be emailed to jgoodman@al.com. Kalen DeBoer, the new coach of Alabama, is this week’s prompt. Next week, we’ll publish more reader-submitted poetry.

“They [Iowa] still messaged me and said, ‘We are proud of you,’ even though I was having trouble and performing poorly in the SEC. You are capable of overcoming this. That’s what finally guided my choice,” Proctor remarked. “They were still confident in me. I was happy to see everyone supporting me as soon as I walked in. They are pleased for me. I understand that when I left, it broke people’s hearts and gave the impression that they were hateful, but every fan base exhibits this behavior.
