Zach Ertz, a tight end in the Pro Bowl, joined the Detroit Lions practice squad. However, it is unclear if he will play in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Prior to their NFC Championship Game matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, it was announced on Monday that the Detroit Lions are adding veteran tight end Zach Ertz to their practice squad. While acknowledging the acquisition on Wednesday, Lions coach Dan Campbell put a stop to any expectations regarding the Pro Bowler’s immediate effect.

“Observe, he recently arrived,” Campbell stated. “I am aware of his fitness. He and I spoke the other day. He knows that we’re just going to assess the situation and see where we stand.

Campbell said that they should spend the next few days determining whether or not they will need Ertz’s skill set to play against the 49ers this week. Ertz is primarily a receiving threat.

“He’s played, and he played really well. He excels at certain things; the question is, “Is this the week to use him?” stated Campbell.

The Lions made a few moves on the practice squad on Tuesday, but they haven’t officially announced this move yet:

  • Placed RB Jermar Jefferson on practice squad IR
  • Signed RB Jake Funk to practice squad
  • Signed OL Matt Farniok to practice squad
  • Released LB Raymond Johnson from practice squad
