It takes a football enthusiast to understand how Windsor is benefiting from the Detroit Lions’ recent success.

Windsor is excited to become a part of the pride as the once-derided Lions play in their second NFL playoff game on Sunday for the first time in a generation.

We are South Detroit, not Detroit. We’re demonstrating our support for our brothers and sisters across the border. At the special hoisting of a Detroit Lions flag at Windsor city hall on Thursday, Ward 3 Councilman Renaldo Agostino commented, “There’s a lot of Lions fans here.”

“The one thing that unites us all,” declared Agostino. “This is the land of football… We should embrace the fact that this is a special moment for us.”

A “salute to our neighbours to the north,” the event drew the attendance of several city council members, including Jim Morrison, Ed Sleiman, Angelo Marignani, and Kieran McKenzie, who donned branded Lions apparel for the event.

“As evident, I’m a Lions fan. I’ve been to Lions games for a long time,” Morrison remarked. “I had a dream that this would occur during my lifetime. And it’s right here! It is taking place.”

The fact that this is uniting Windsor and Detroit and keeping our minds off of all the horrible things going on in the world is very wonderful.

The game is scheduled to take place at Ford Field at 3 p.m. against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Sunday marks the end of a protracted period of ineffective football: Thirty-two years has passed since the Lions played in the second round of the playoffs.
